The NWO Domain Science (ENW) is cooperating with the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) in the programme User Support Space Research. The aim of this programme is to provide support to researchers working in the Netherlands during the (preparation for) use of scientific infrastructure in space for the purpose of high quality research. The programme is open to excellent research in the areas of earth observation and planetary research. Possible research themes for earth observation are geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, cryosphere, biosphere and anthroposphere, as well as research in which these areas intersect. The research theme for planetary research is planetary evolution and habitability, focused on our own solar system. A budget of 7.2 M€ is available for the period 2017-2019. Three annual calls will be published.
Funding from the User Support Programma Space Research can be applied for by associate, assistant and full professors or researchers with a comparable position who hold an appointment at a Dutch university or a research institute recognised by NWO. The main applicant should have a paid employment contract for at least the duration of the application process and the research for which funding is requested. A maximum of 1 application per researcher per year can be submitted.
Personnel costs (one position per research project; 1 PhD for 4 years or 1 postdoc for a maximum of 3 years) and a maximum of 50,000 euros for additional costs (material and/or travel costs).
The 2018 Call also offers the possibility to request an in-kind contribution from the Netherlands eScience Center for an optional eScience component in the research proposal.
Applicants cannot apply for a grant to cover the costs of tenured staff, student assistants, analysts or technicians, overhead cost, general laboratory equipment and the costs for maintenance, insurance, congress visits and publications.
The closing date for the compulsory pre-proposals was on 30 August 2018, 14:00 hours CEST.
The closing date for the full proposals is 15 November 2018, 14:00 hours CET.
To allow interested applicants to get acquainted with the aim and conditions of this call for proposals, an information event was organised on 20 June 2018. At this meeting special attention was given to the possibility of applying for additional (in-kind) funding from the Netherlands eScience Center. Further information was given on the eScience Center’s strategy and approach, the role of the eScience Research Engineers, the capabilities of the Dutch National e-Infrastructure, the software technologies implemented and applied by the eScience Center. The presentations can be found below.
Please submit your proposal using the electronic application system ISAAC. Submit here.
