User Support Programme Space Research

User Support Space Research 2012-2016

The NWO Division for the Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) is cooperating with the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) in the programme User Support Space Research. The aim of this programme is to provide support to researchers working in the Netherlands during the (preparation for) use of scientific infrastructure in space for the purpose of high quality research. The programme is financed by the ministry for Education, Culture and Science.

The programme is open to excellent research in the areas of earth observation and planetary research. Possible research themes for earth observation are atmospheric research, water, solid earth and land processes, as well as interaction between all parts of the Earth system. The research theme for planetary research during the period 2012-2016 is: planetary evolution and habitability.

The first call for proposals was issued on 14 September 2011, with a deadline for application of 26 October 2011, 12.00 hrs (mandatory Letters of Intent) and 7 December 2011, 12.00 hrs (full proposals). Please use the forms that are provided via this website (Downloads); older versions will not be accepted. Applications must be submitted through the electronic grant application system Iris of NWO. Resubmission of rejected applications is not possible.

Application procedure

Who can apply
Researchers employed at: a) Dutch universities, NWO or KNAW institutes and NKI; or b) research institutes located in the Netherlands with an independent research aim without a profit motive, who cooperate in the proposed project with a partner stated under a).

The main applicant should have a guaranteed appointment for the duration of the project. A maximum of 1 application per researcher per year can be submitted.

Applications must comply to the criteria as stated in the guidelines for applying in this programme.

What can be applied for

Personnel costs (one position per research project; 1 PhD for 4 years or 1 postdoc for a maximum of 3 years) and a maximum of k€ 50 for additional costs (material and/or travel costs).

Assessment Procedure

The assessment procedure is under the responsibility of the assessment committee appointed by the General Board of the Division for the Earth and Life Sciences (GB-ALW).

Budget

A total budget of 9.5 million euros is available for the period 2012-2016. For each annual round a maximum of 1.9 million euros is available.
