General

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is a recognised leading centre of expertise in the fields of health, nutrition and environmental protection. RIVM works mainly for the Dutch government. RIVM also shares their knowledge with governments and supranational bodies around the world. The results of the research, monitoring, modelling and risk assessment are used to underpin policy on public health, food, safety and the environment. RIVM employs over 1400 employees, many of whom work in multidisciplinary fields.

RIVM and Space

Functioning as a leading centre of expertise and research, RIVM advises and supports policy-makers and professionals in public health and environmental areas.

RIVM sends out a smog warning, for example, when air quality in the Netherlands falls below European standards. Provincial authorities can then take the necessary action to protect vulnerable groups. Information is also readily available to the general public.

In support of the above mentioned operational activities RIVM in involved in international product validation projects, in which dedicated ground based monitoring systems are operated.
